Overview

Big Country Raw was founded in 2012 in Smithville, Ontario as a family-run business. It has grown to become one of Canada’s most popular and most widely distributed raw pet food brands, now entering the US market as of early 2025 through a partnership with Frontier Distributing. BCR operates its own CFIA-inspected facility in Smithville, holds HACCP certification since 2023, and has received an “Excellent” rating — the highest available — in every third-party Bureau Veritas audit conducted. All ingredients are sourced from Canadian farmers and processors. Their processing facility flash-freezes all products at below -20°C immediately after production to preserve nutritional integrity.

BCR offers the largest selection of raw dog food formats in Canada: frozen complete meals, single-protein pure blends, signature multi-protein blends, dehydrated Trek meals, meaty bones, and raw supplements and treats. The breadth of their catalogue makes them the most accessible entry point for new raw feeders while also serving the needs of experienced owners seeking rotational protein variety.

Our Assessment

Dogs Naturally Magazine gives BCR a high overall score, rating Pure (9.4/10), Signature Blends (9.2/10), and Dinners (9.2/10) as low-risk dog foods. DogFoodReviews.com awards equivalent scores. The main differentiator between the lines is completeness: Dinners are balanced meals ready to serve; Pure is single-protein for DIY feeders or elimination diets; Signature Blends are multi-protein without added produce. All lines use pasture-raised beef, lamb, and buffalo, free-range poultry, and wild-caught fish — sourced from local Canadian farmers.

Owner reviews across Canada are strongly positive. Improved coat quality, reduced allergy symptoms, better digestion, and higher energy are the most frequently cited outcomes. The main practical concerns noted by owners are storage requirements (a dedicated freezer), thawing logistics, and cost relative to kibble — all standard trade-offs for raw feeding that apply to every brand in the category.

Raw Feeding Note

BCR products must be kept frozen. Thaw in the refrigerator 24 hours before feeding. Do not feed raw and kibble in the same meal — feed at separate times due to different digestion rates. For dogs new to raw, transition over 7-14 days by mixing small amounts of raw with existing food and gradually increasing. BCR’s Dinners line is the best starting point for first-time raw feeders — it is the most complete, most convenient, and most nutritionally balanced of the three frozen lines.
